🌊TUNA-TOBER🌊 PROMPT CHALLENGE 2024 🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟🐟

Hello friends! So last month I realized that one of the reasons I'm struggling to get my writing back up to my old speed is I am seriously out of practice since Dec/Jan when shit went down and I stopped writing for a while. After some thought, I decided I was gonna set up a little prompt challenge for myself, just a general, 'here's a prompt a day' thing for about a month. And I tossed this idea out onto my fave Daredevil discord server to see if anyone would want to join. And I'm happy to say there were takers, including some of my favorite writers in the fandom! So I've set up a delicious prompt challenge for all of us, and for anyone else who wants to take part.

For each day in October, there are three prompts: an 🌧️angst/whump prompt🌧️, a 🌻fluff prompt🌻, and a 🔥kink prompt🔥. Participants are free to choose which one of the prompts they want to write or make art of, or they can try to incorporate two, or even all three prompts into a single fic or art piece. They can write a short fic/make art every day, or just on whichever days they feel like (personally I'm going to shoot for one fic a day, but we'll see), or even incorporate those prompts into the chapters of longer fics. There are also four 'backup' prompt options for each category in case anyone hits a day or prompt where they aren't really feeling what's available on the chosen day. If any of these prompts inspire you, you can feel free to take on the Tuna-Tober challenge even if you're not in the server! This challenge is also not fandom-specific (although I have a feeling I'm mostly gonna write Charlie Cox characters, a surprise to precisely zero people, but again, we'll see).

Sometime this week, I'll be setting up a sideblog specifically for Tuna-Tober. That sideblog blog will reblog any Tuna-Tober fics/art or link to those fics that are posted on Ao3 so they'll all be easy to find. That blog will also have instructions for how to tag your Tuna-Tober fics and/or art pieces. If you'd like to be notified when that sideblog is up so you can follow it, let me know in the comments.

hello obviously there isn't anything i can really do to control this (unfortunately i deleted a bunch of posts BEFORE turning off reblogs on them) but i would prefer that people did not circulate my posts from this blog any more... i appreciate that people are kind to me about my art, but that is just my request i suppose. this blog is unprivated now, and if you'd like to see what is still up you can look at them here. my ask box is also open but i will not be making any art posts here from now on. here is a little preemptive faq:

yes. but i've been pulling away from posting very much online, and the things i'm interested in drawing nowadays are generally more private, so i won't be directing anyone there or anything. i don't consider my new blog to be a continuation of this one.

that isn't really that surprising since i didn't honestly put great effort into concealing it or anything. we are probably not friends, so i hold no sway over you, but i would still prefer you did not share it or treat me as if i am still "vilz who posts fnaf art". i'm just a whatever blogger who blogs about whatever things. also to be frank i do not think my new blog has anything that interesting for people who followed for the kind of art i used to post here. this is not an invitation to say "it is interesting!".

why did you delete all your self ship art?

people seem to enjoy my self ship art a lot, which is very flattering, but i don't want people to be looking at them any more. i realize that they are still rebloggable and are still circulating around, which is nobody's fault but my own, but i would prefer they were not shared any more. i can't really do anything about it and i also don't blame anyone for reblogging those posts since it's obviously not something they would know, but yeah.

are you going to finish your uncompleted fics?

i would really like to say yes, because i care a great deal about aspects of them, but it's looking pretty unlikely. i lost all my files (and my calmlywriter key !!! always save your emails and receipts, everyone!!!) and also it's hard to feel motivated about them now. i guess i will leave this up in the air just to soothe my own feelings but in reality the answer is Probably Not.

Kind of a random ask but okay. I noticed you have a lot of mutuals and my question is do you have any tips on how to socialize in the fandom here? Like I have people that I would love to interact with, but Idk how. Idk if this has happened to you

Hi anon!! I totally get where you're coming from. I never really thought too much about it and I don't know if I have a specific method, but here's what I would do, if I were you:

Don't be afraid to talk and reach out to people. It doesn't have to be sliding in their DMs, which I understand can be awkward if you don't know the person, but routinely commenting on their posts, their fanfic, their art, or reblogging their posts with nice and enthusiastic comments is a great way to make friends! I don't always have the time or the spoons to do that unfortunately, but I try to do it as much as I can. I really appreciate all the creators in fandom and I try to show that.

If you're a creator (but even if you aren't) don't be shy about posting your work and maybe tagging people in WIP memes or tag games or something like that. Not everyone responds, but I feel like tagging ppl sometimes opens the door for more communication, and if they tag you back you can just keep the conversation going.

When you see people reblog a prompt list or ask game, send them asks!!! Please, just send them an ask!!! This is actually a pet peeve of mine tbh, people reblogging an ask list or ask game from someone who obviously wants to get asks lol (why else would they rb it) without sending an ask first. I feel like it's basic fandom etiquette, but it's also a really nice gesture even if you don't know the person that well. Showing that you actively care about what someone has to say is the first step into getting to know them, I think, and it's also just very nice to be included.

Getting into a fandom discord or group chat isn't always easy or intuitive, but if you do find yourself in one, don't be afraid to talk!! I may or may not be suffering from "can't shut the hell up disease" LOL but I'll take any opportunity to talk about my faves that I can get 😅 It may feel like you don't have much to say at first, but sometimes just reacting to what others say and being generally nice and positive can be a good first step.

It can be tempting to lurk around and only look at what others say or post, or to read fics without leaving a comment, or to like art but not reblog it, but it does nothing for helping you meet people. Imo this is actually really pervasive and not good for fandom overall. To each their own, of course, I'm not going to tell anyone how they should engage in fandom, but my best and most lasting friendships were made because we started reading each other's fics for example, or complimenting each other's art, or they reached out to me because this or that meme made them think of me, or we tag each other in games and stuff, or we took part in fandom exchanges, etc etc. It might be hard at first if this isn't something that comes naturally to you, but I do think it's worth it if you want to be part of a community. And, like any community, fandom requires give-and-take to thrive.

TLDR: sometimes seeing ppl in an established fandom interact with each other and having friends can be nerve-wracking and you don't know where to start, but honestly fandom is all about engagement. Basically, talk to people! Compliment their art or their fic! Tag them in games! Send them asks! Be kind! That’s it 😊

What does love mean to you? How would you describe your ideal love? Love perhaps could mean so many different things to other people, many look at love and think of their family; their parents, siblings, grandparents and so on. Many think blood isn’t thicker than water than how many say it was, and value more of their friendships viewing them to be love. The traditional way of thinking about love would be romantically, but even so, romantically has many options to chose from. So many foreign options to the film maker, Micha, assigned to screen write a short film about romance for this subject term.

The young student has no knowledge about love and whatsoever ever, it leaves her feeling damp. Like the grass after it was heavy raining, with lifeless heavy body and left to be soaking in to the mournful sorrows of how she is going to fail this assignment. She sighs in to her palms, next to her sitting would be a young girl with red hair and a boy next to the girl with magnetic electric blue hair and a rockstar kinda vibe to him.

Mark raised his eyebrow as he twirls in his seat, wearing the very much rocker clothing style he has going on. He can’t help but wonder what’s with her? “What’s wrong with you?”

Ningning shrugs turning to Micha, who lifts her head only to look down and bang it on the surface of the table she’s sitting in front of.

“Mr Byun happened.” She squeals, anticipating the large F- on her report. That way she will definitely have to repeat this grade next year. She doesn’t want to do that though, she came a long way to where she is now.

The boy lets out a soft ‘ohhh’ before shifting to the depressed and detained girl sighing as if it’s the world ending. He pats her back comfortingly, but it did anything but comfort to her future grade failures. Then, an opportunity risen, or so Micha caught on when the rushing boy coming into the cafeteria with a beaming smile and an upbeat musician vibe to him. The way his brunette curls flock in the air as he sits down in front of the three friends, he flashed a wink to Mark and Ningning before turning his full attention to the girl lifting her face up with a deadpan expression.

Donghyuck let’s out a whistle. “Sup crew was’ good.” He says with a flashy smile before Mark and Ningning shrug, motioning their hands to my way. The confused theatre boy looks about, clearly baffled until he met his best friend’s fed up expression that screams ‘Help me I wanna die’, Look. He knows that look all to well, something must’ve happened in her class with Mr Byun Baekhyun.

“What’s got your knickers dry, best friend?” Donghyuck jokingly throws.

Micha raised her eyebrows at her best friend. “Do you have anything better to do than make inappropriate comments about my panties?” He grins. “Nope when you look like you want to absolutely bury yourself six feet under in a coffin whilst you’re alive.”

I mean, he wasn’t wrong at all. If anything he was more than accurate. It amazes Micha how well he can take out words from her mouth that she couldn’t dare to speak out loud. Ningning and Mark soon left the area heading to grab something to eat, Micha did not go as she felt her appetite dimmer by the amounts of stress she is going through. Then an idea struck her when Donghyuck scrolls through his phone. A girl was eyeing him up and down from afar with a loose smirk plastering on her face, she was watching the boy as if he were her dinner. Micha leans closer whispering to her friend. “Yah, she’s watching you like she’s going to inhale you.” Donghyucks turns to the right way eyeing the girl back, he turns to Micha whispering. “I know. That’s my fling from last night.”

“You’re…experienced in dating right?” Micha comes forward leaning causing him abruptly lean back. The girl was standing up now leaning all over the cafeteria table, coming closer and closer to end the gap between her friend. He looks at her, blinking a few times by the sudden change of demure from Micha; she was now assertive and determined. But determined for what?? Donghyucks let’s out a ‘Huh?’ Before Micha continues to speak above him.

Micha huffs out. “I- I mean, you have your experience with women right? In love? Don’t you?”

“Yes, why? What’s going on with you.” Donghyuck blurts out, he can’t help but wonder if Mr Baekhyun has already gotten to Micha and made her crazy, after so many years of suffering in the Art Comms Filming department major.

“Help me out here will you? I need to screenwrite a short length film about love.” Micha whines coming next to Donghyuck now invading his space by holding his arm and wrapping it around. She was pressing on him so intensely he felt his cheeks turn a little different colour from the bronze tan. He looks around, people were watching them. Giving them judgement stares, as well as whispering and chattering about how close they were suddenly. It was no surprise that Donghyuck played tactics and non committing relationship issues plays a big part here to it. People always wondered if she’s dating him, or if he was dating her, and when you both claim no; people couldn’t believe it. As if Heterosexual friendships weren’t a normal thing to see.

He eventually gives in to her whining, he sighs out nodding a few times. “Okay okay, I’ll help out but I am in charge okay? You’re going to follow the three conditions I have for you.”

Micha let’s go off the arm wrapped and nods, she listens in carefully awaiting Donghyuck to announce. The boy leans closer whispering to your ears. “Everything we will do will be for your project, there won’t be any likeliness to it or enjoyment to it.”

“Okay…” Micha trails.

He cuts off. “- And it will be a very physical deal, Micha, have you ever gone on dates or I dunno… went to the movies with a guy you liked?”

The silence from the girl was a loud enough answer, at some point Donghyucks swore he could’ve heard crickets to the awkward silence. The girl looks down slightly embarrassed and shy. Movies? It wasn’t that simple for Micha, she was shy and not only shy she has strict parents. High school and dating? Not a good combination there. The Strict parents have always told her to finish education first and then date. Or at least leave the house and then do whatever you want, because they couldn’t care less to stop her when she was outta the house. Micha moved out but, University happened and dating whilst you’re a UNI student? God forbid. No one would survive it, that is also why Donghyuck is such a player. No one is looking for a relationship with him because he’s a goddamn theatre student. They’re busy 24/7 all year round with no breaks in between.

Hence why most girls and guys end with situationship and therefore that wasn’t the ideal situation for someone who has never dated ever, in their life. So Micha wasn’t very in tune with her life and dating life together. It weren’t aligning.

Donghyuck couldn’t help but chuckle a little, at her innocence rather. “Seriously no dates?” He asks again. Micha looks up glaring, she slaps his arm on the side. “Dude stop rubbing it in!”

“I can’t help it when you’re literally if Virgin Mary was alive to this day.” The boy exclaims in whispers hushing her voice down.

Micha look away rolling eyes at the littlest jokes he does to make fun of your situation, though she knows he means it well. Donghyuck softly smirks looking her up and down suddenly. “The third condition we have pet names. Couples have pet names for each other, has anyone have you one?”

“I haven’t touched a man yet along a women, so what do you think?” Micha blurts out in disbelief.

“I’ll take that as a no.” He leans closer grabbing a hold of her hand. “Well then do you agree, Micha, to this workplace fake relationship?”

The girl glances eye to eye with Donghyuck before nodding with a firm grasp hold she shakes his hand. “I don’t have much choice. You’re my only hope, Donghyuck.”

You can take my work for personal use if you don't get any profit from it. If it's online - credit me.

Can I dub/translate your comics?

Yes but with few conditions.

1. You credit me as an original creator. If it's a video you put the credits in the video, not in the description. If it's a post you put them in the post itself, not in the comments.

2. You do not put your watermark on my work/do not erase my watermark. You also don't colour it/don't "fix" it. It's my work and my work alone.

3. You do not change the dialogue/add phrases that weren't said by the characters. Again, it is my work, it's my interpretation and I will not tolerate you taking my work and changing it to your liking.

4. If you want to profit from my work - you don't have my permission.

5. You take down videos/posts with my work if I ask you to.

If any of these don't suit you - you don't have my permission.

Can I make an AI bot of your character?

Hard no. Roleplay bots are almost always using public fanfiction without the consent of the authors, not paying for their hard work but using it for profit, it's theft and I'm not going to contribute to that. I'm already considering removing my own bots from Character AI, as ch.ai still doesn't tell the public how they're training their bots so we'll see about that.

Anything that is absolutely off the table when sending an ask?

- Please don't vent to me. I'm not a professional phycologist and I never agreed to play the role of one. I also avoid questions like "I had a bad day, can you draw[ ]?" because after them my inbox becomes a venting place. Please seek professional help if you feel like every day is worse than the previous.

- Please do not send me anything NS///FW. As much as I can support suggestive content, explicit stuff will be immediately deleted and if you make me uncomfortable I probably will block you. No hard feelings but Tumblr is an SFW place for me. If you see me reblog something not SFW, it was probably made by my friend or with previous discussion and proper mature labels for everything.

Can I send you a DM, not an ask?

After some not-very-pleasant experiences that made me uncomfortable, I closed my DM's for everyone except my mutuals. But you're still free to send me asks about anything(within reasonable limits ofc).

Can I write a fic based on your art? Can I use your ideas in my works?

About ideas - ask first. I can get protective over one idea but completely don't care about the other one. If I said yes, credit me as an original source.

Can I draw a fanart/write you a fic?

Of course!! I'm absolutely happy to see anything! Also please tag me when you're done. If it's one of my au's - use specific tags for fanart so even if dumb Tumblr doesn't send me your tag, I will eventually bump into it browsing the tag!<3 (you can also tag me again if you think I didn't see your fan work, I absolutely don't mind!!) Also, feel free to drop an ask with a link too!

Can I tag you in other stuff?

As I already said you can absolutely tag me for any type of fan content(it doesn't even need to be yours). Memes are fine too, just don't do it every day alright?

Why don’t you answer my ask?

It can be one of these reasons:

1. I want to answer your ask with an art piece/comic. It takes time.

2. Your question contains spoilers so I'm keeping it for later when the truth can be revealed =]

3. I'm busy. Yeah.

4. I've already answered something similar/I don't want to answer your question so your ask got deleted.

When will you continue working on [insert whatever]?

When I can. I'm not pausing my things just to spite you. Most of the time I'm just busy or I simply don't have the energy to do anything. To everyone who says stuff like "oh well we've been waiting for a few months already!!" - I'm not here to entertain you. I'm here to have fun and share it with other people and you're currently ruining it. I will block anyone who is doing this continuously.

Can you draw my characters?

For free? No, I don't accept requests like that. You can commission me though. When my commissions are open of course. I will open DMs when it happens.

What content are you okay/not okay with?

Admiring of any of these in real life: terrorism, racism, rape, war, sexism, misogyny, transphobia, homo/queerphobia, pedophilia, sex trafficking, mental illnesses. If the content tries to show how terrible these things are I am mostly okay with it.

Is there anything I should watch out for on your page?

Dark themes, suggestive themes, and sometimes negative ones. I'm not afraid to draw violence, blood and gore. Dark humour. In general, I don't recommend anyone who's under 16 to be here but it's always your responsibility for what you're about to see.

In your bio, it says russians DNI? Is it about every russian or only those who support the war?

I don't care if you're a good russian or not, I don't care about your opinions and worldview. I don't want you in here. I have no time nor desire to try and understand how good you are. As a Ukrainian, I have all the right to tell all russians and people who admire anything connected to them to go fuck yourself. It's my safe place and I don't feel safe with zz's in it. Do you feel like I'm being "too categorical"? Don't make it my problem and leave. End of conversation.

What is your stance on reposting your artwork/fics?

The only cases when I allow reposting are dubs/translations with credits and all the other rules that I mentioned earlier. In other cases, no, do not repost my artwork. Doesn’t matter if you credit, I said no.

I post on Tumblr and Tiktok, my nickname always contains "xitsen" in it. You also could possibly see the dubs of my stuff on YouTube, as I allow these. Please send me an ask with a link to the repost if it's somewhere else. I will try to solve the situation myself.

Can I use your work as a reference? Can I trace/copy it?

Reference? Yes. If it's very obvious - credit me too. Trace/copy? No. No. And no. It's straight-up stealing.

For art pieces 90% of the time it's Paint Tool Sai 2, sometimes Photoshop and Krita. For animations, it's rather Toon Boom Premium or Krita.

My tablet is fucking 6 years old, Wacom something. They don't sell these anymore so I couldn't even find the model lmao.

Brushes - standard SAI brushes, watercolour for shading and brush for line art. If it's textured I use my custom one, you can create it yourself if you use SAI.

Hey friends 💗 so, as many of you already know, a lot of fans (many of them fanfic writers) have been leaving tumblr lately and our community has been affected by a lot of negativity and stress for the compounding effects of multiple reasons. Though this is by no means the ONLY reason, fanfic writers have recently dealt with a lot of undue hate, unnecessary drama, and not enough appreciation.

Writers don’t only write for validation. HOWEVER, the experience and practice of writing comes with a lot of feelings of inadequacy and imposter syndrome. Moreover, writing is primarily a mode of connection. Al of art is. People who write, paint, make music, build stuff…we all do so as ways to express ourselves and connect with others. And getting to share what you write at the end of the writing process adds a layer of meaning to what you do that wouldn’t otherwise exist if you just saved it in a little folder somewhere on your device. So, when writers feel more stress and drama than appreciation, support, or any sign that the connection they reached out for has been made, it naturally makes us question what we do.

It pains me (and I know so may of my mutuals share this sentiment) to see so many talented and beautiful souls leave the fandom space because the culture of community and support that used to be here is no longer inclusive of everyone. It seems, these days, every time I log on, I’m seeing more and more mutuals saying that they’re going to leave, take a long break, or stop posting. I don’t know about you all, but I know I speak both, as a reader, and a writer, when I say that other people leaving is not good for them, for me, or for anyone who loves this fandom and this community.

What can we do about this?

Nobody is estimating the value of your worth and trying to market your labor. Do you know how rare that is???

Writers support writers. Lift each other up. Share each others work. Give each other feedback. Remind each other of each others talent when you see someone starting to doubt themselves or haters getting under their skin.

Readers: like, COMMENT, FUCKIN REBLOG. it takes an extra second. It’s worth more than you know. Do it. It’s the least you can do for someone who has poured their heart and soul into something and delivered it to you on a silver platter.

Writers, readers, shitposters, fans a like: look out for one another. Take care of each other. Have each others backs. If you see a hateful comment, if you see someone trying to gate-keep, shame, or alienate anyone for any reason, CALL. THEM. OUT. Actions have consequences. There is no hierarchy within the fandom. You don’t get to tell someone how matty will feel about them as a fan and you don’t get to judge the way that someone participates in this fandom.

This month, a lot of your favorite authors will be posting October/ fall/ Halloween themed fics because of this. I think it’s the perfect time to revisit the way that we do reader and writer appreciation around here. i am so happy to inform you that there is a THRIVING murderbot fandom on tumblr, ao3 and discord!! a big chunk of the fandom hangs out in a few different discord servers, if that's your thing you should check them out! I'm an active member of the biggest and oldest one, the Murderbot Diaries 2.0 discord, which i can get you an invite for if you like! We have some really fun fandom events (including an ao3 comment bingo going on right now) and so many fun conversations about the books and fic ideas. There's also a couple other servers that have been created more recently, including New Tideland which I hear is also very friendly, i bet someone else can get you a link for that one.

Can we just do away with the idea of only reblogging fics/gifs/art from people we are friends/mutuals with?

There is so much joy in rummaging through tags and reblogging stuff you’ve enjoyed.

“I will reblog this, as my friend made it, but on this other person’s work, which I also enjoyed, I will only leave a like or a comment, as they’re not kissing my ring.” No.

“I read and enjoyed this, but I have mutuals who do not get along with this person, so I will not reblog it.” No.

“This person is really popular, other people need engagement more than they do. My interaction won’t make a difference.” No.

Sit down, sweaty, and reevaluate, it’s not that deep. Fandom is a space to be creative. Support your fellow creators, uplift them when you enjoy something and stop allowing fandom politics/drama to dictate how you conduct yourself. Some of my bestest fandom friends have been made through a total lack of regard for social hierarchy and just shooting my shot with people whose work I enjoy. If you want fandoms you enjoy to be abundant in fics and art and not like a fucking echo chamber where you’re constantly reading the same shit by the same people, then be prepared to step outside of the box occasionally. The only way to encourage more creations is to encourage the creators.

I know I made this post awhile ago but it needs to be said again.

Imposter Syndrome is truly both a silent killer and something that noisily yells inside our minds that whatever were doing isn’t enough. Either it’s not pretty enough or it’s not eloquent enough, it’s lacking body or words or colors. It’s like a phantom, staying on your shoulder and EVEN when your satisfied, it suddenly shows it’s face and asks if it’s as good as so and so.

I cry at the thought of the number of people who have cut their artist talents or writing talents short due to Imposter Syndrome. I cry when I see mutuals expressing how shitty their writing is or how bad their art is, and it hurts to see them stop.

Please, no matter if you’re a passive reader in fics or if you look and admire someones art, please consider leaving a like/heart or something that shows the creator of said item that someone somewhere saw what they did and chose to show a small amount of appreciation for said item the creator put time and effort in.

Of course comments and reblogs are even MORE amazing! Be it for artists or writers, Im sure I speak for many of us when I say that I read every reblogs tags, because it warms my heart to see, even if it’s just OMG YESSSSSS WOOOH FINALLY GREAT!

Why am I making this post? Because I saw 4 different posts from 4 different mutuals today expressing that they are either thinking of abandoning their fics/arts or are fully abandoning it all now, and that hurts to see.

This won’t be short, but you wouldn’t expect that from me, would you? 🤣

I’ve been on Tumblr for just a bit over a year because I needed to get off my family’s back after my three decades long Sandman brain-rot got worse again due to the Netflix series. I hovered around a handful of followers for months until things exploded (I still don’t know why tbh, I think it was one particular meta that kicked things off a bit), and I somehow ended up with hundreds of followers, which might not be much to some, but it’s a lot for me.

So to all of you I’d like to say: Thank you for being here. I don’t always manage to stay on top of things because my notifs are a mess and I lose track, plus I have a rather busy life and can often only write in batches and then queue, but each of you is appreciated, even if I accidentally forget to get back to you or if we aren’t mutuals.

I’ve made such lovely connections over the last year—my interest in The Sandman definitely does not align with the main focus that shan’t be named, and I’m glad that you folks are out there. You probably know who you are.

Now to the obligatory “your posts wrapped” thing—and I’m only doing it because I need to make a point (of course I do 🤣).

Even if it wasn’t my most “successful” one (what does that even mean?), this one meant the most to me:

I love writing metas, whether they cover literary concepts, psychology, music or art because I’m a permanently brain-frazzled multi-hyphenate who has to talk about everything that won’t leave her alone.

I also love when you’re sending me asks btw. For the latter, I hope they pick up again in 2024 because they really nosedived since I switched off anonymous asks (which I won’t change, soz) after some people just thought it’s good sport to be an arse about my not being here to pray at the altar of the ship. I guess we have briefly covered the ugly side of Tumblr, too, then.

Writing

But what I'm most proud of when I think of all the things I've done in 2023 is my fiction and poetry. And that's both a happy and slightly sad thing to address.

My 31 Haikus for Sandtober started as a bit of fun, but they’ve developed a life of their own, and people seemingly liked them. The post also contains a bit of my fan-art:

I still intend to turn them into a hardcover at some point, but I won’t be able to create all the artwork myself, so if you’re a fan-artist and want to know what I’m thinking of, please get in touch (I’ll still talk about this in more detail at some point though).

The other thing I’m incredibly proud of is “The Light of Stars”.

I started it as a NaNoWriMo project in 2022 (I always use NaNo to do something that is less stressful than my professional writing projects), wrote it in a bit more than a month—and then did nothing with near 80,000 words until June 2023.

And then I thought “Fuck it,” and published it on Ao3. It’s a canon x OC fic, and this is where it gets a bit sad. Because for most of us writers, these are never the posts that get most engagement (the ratio is really something like 100 : 1 — 500 for a shitpost, 5 for an average writing post).

On Ao3, it gradually picked up because I published chapter after chapter, and I think I can say that it’s done fairly well over there in terms of engagement for an OC fic, and above all how people engage with it. Because it’s a bit deeper despite being romance, it deals with heavy topics like grief, and I’m so glad to have touched a few people’s hearts with it, and that it was meaningful to them. So much so that you all convinced me to write a sequel.

But here’s the thing: The general engagement with writing, especially non-explicit, non-ship, non-readerY/N on Tumblr is very, very low.

Writers who write canon x OC are still struggling to be heard through the noise (it’s not just me, I’ve had many conversations about this, so I’ll just say: I’ll speak for many of us). There are basically hardly any events for us to participate in (most of us only ever do so if we shift to canon one-shots, poetry or metas. If we don’t: Again, no one cares), and fandom often actively chooses to ignore us because “all OCs are self-inserts, ew.” Which is patently not true, and I could go on a long rant now why many canon x canon fics are very obvious self-inserts, which I won’t.

But even if all OCs were self-inserts, even if all characters were—so what? All writing is to a degree based on self-insertion because it comes from our brains—it’s not a bad thing. But apparently, it becomes a bad thing if the character is an OC, heaven knows why.

So if I had one wish (I’m allowed one, right?) for 2024, it would be that people engage more with OC fics and include them more in community events. That fandom, which prides itself in community, includes writers who don’t write for (the main) ship/s a bit more, especially if they don’t write smut (which I personally even do professionally, but I don’t want to have to do it in fanfic just to get engagement). I’m not holding my breath because I know that’s not where fandom’s oft single-minded focus lies, but a girl can dream, right?

And with that, I want to get to my proudest accomplishments of them all:

Being one (arguably the main) instigator of the maddest crack ship that has ever graced (?) the face of the earth, spawned the most unhinged discussion (much truth in it though 🤣) and even NSFW fanart. I promise I’ll write that fic about Murphy and his Cool Hat:
